The 3rd International Symposium on Cities and Sustainable Transportation

From June 30 to July 2, 2025, the 3rd International Symposium on Cities and Sustainable Transportation was held at the Academic Exchange Center of the South Campus of Chang'an University. This symposium was organized by the School of Transportation Engineering of Chang'an University. Themed Urban Transportation for the Future - Innovation, Green and Inclusiveness, it aimed to promote the sustainable development of urban transportation globally and foster cross - disciplinary and cross - sector academic exchanges and cooperation. The symposium invited 16 internationally renowned scholars in the field of transportation from 12 countries across 5 continents. These included Patricia Mokhtarian, an academician of the US National Academy of Engineering and a professor at Georgia Tech; Trofimenko Iurii, an academician of the Russian Academy of Transport Sciences and a professor at the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering; and Zorin Vladimir, an academician of the Russian Academy of Problems of Quality and a professor at the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering. Prof. Chen Jianxun, Vice President of Chang'an University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Ge Ying'en, Dean of the School of Transportation Engineering.

 

At the opening ceremony, Patricia Mokhtarian gave a speech titled Can Practice - Oriented Travel Demand Forecasting Models Include Attitudinal Explanatory Variables? Progress at the Frontier. Trofimenko Iurii gave a speech titled Methodological Issues of Assessment and Verification of Initial Data and Calculations of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Automobile and Off - Road Transport of the Russian Federation. Zorin Vladimir gave a speech titled Reduction of Environmental Load From Operation of Transport and Road - Construction Machines by Design and Technological Methods.

 

During the symposium, a Meet the Editors forum was organized. It invited editors - in - chief of several important international academic journals in the field of transportation to communicate with participants face - to - face. These included Jonas De Vos, Editor - in - Chief of Transport Reviews; Reza Zanjirani Farahani, Editor - in - Chief of Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review; Mark Zuidgeest, Editor - in - Chief of Journal of Transport Geography; Jennifer Dill, Editor - in - Chief of Transportation Research Record; and David Levinson, Editor - in - Chief of Findings. They provided detailed explanations on the positioning of their respective journals, the review process, and submission tips, especially reminding participants how to avoid desk - rejection. During the round - table forum, they interacted with participants in a question - and - answer session, providing valuable submission guidance and academic exchange opportunities, especially for young scholars.

 

The symposium also arranged panel report exchange sessions for registered participants, including experts, scholars, and teachers and students. The sessions were held around topics such as Public Transport, Infrastructure Planning, Travel Happiness, Risk and Ecology, and Travel Behavior. Participants shared their latest research findings and practical exploration summaries. The atmosphere was active, and the academic exchange was intense.

 

The symposium provided a high - level academic exchange platform for scholars in the fields of urban transportation and sustainable development. It strongly promoted in - depth cooperation in this global field. The teachers and students of Chang'an University were deeply involved throughout the process.
