Lecture 1

Time:

15:00 – 16:00

Title

Data-driven Transport Modelling in Urban Areas

Speaker

Dr Minh Kieu, Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Auckland

Abstract:

This talk will explore cutting-edge approaches in transport analytics and social simulation models, offering valuable insights into how these tools can improve urban transport systems and enhance city resilience. By discussing topics such as synthetic data generation, agent-based modeling, and wireless charging technologies for autonomous vehicles, this talk will be relevant to urban planners, data scientists, transport engineers, and policymakers. It will also benefit those in adjacent fields who are interested in how data-driven solutions can address urban mobility challenges, improve well-being, and contribute to more sustainable, adaptable cities.

Biography

Dr Kieu is a Senior Lecturer in traffic and urban analytics at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. His research focuses on the use of data analytics and computer simulation techniques to solve complex urban problems. He leads the Transport Analytics Research Lab (TARLab - https://transportanalytics.nz) and is the Future and Intelligent Transport Systems Lead at the Transport Research Centre, Faculty of Engineering, University of Auckland.

Lecture 2

Time:

16:00 – 17:00

Title

Exploring the Mechanisms Behind Transit’s Impact on Housing Prices

Speaker

Professor Xinyu Cao, University of Minnesota

Abstract

Drawing on evidence from the Twin Cities (Minneapolis–St. Paul), this presentation quantifies how light-rail and bus-rapid-transit investments affect local housing prices and disentangles the ways in which land-use policy and transport policy jointly shape property markets.

Biography:

Dr. Xinyu Cao is Professor at the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, and Visiting Professor at Chang’an University. His research centres on the interactions between land use and travel behaviour and on the analysis of urban satisfaction. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, which have received over 17,000 Google Scholar citations (h-index 68). He is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher and is listed among the top 2 % of scientists worldwide in the Stanford-Elsevier database. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research Part D and as Associate Editor of Transport Policy and Journal of Planning Education and Research. He is a past president of the International Association for China Planning (IACP). He received his degrees from Tsinghua University and the University of California, Davis.
